This
package uses our 8.5lb flywheel platform with the correct ring gear
for the E30 325i (and other models using the M20 i-series engine),
and the complete clutch kit from the E34 M5 3.6l.
Even
though the flywheel weight is only 8.5lbs, the heavier E34 M5 clutch
package gives the overall performance gain of a conventional E30
lightweight flywheel of around 12lbs with E30 clutch.
Why
is this a big deal for the E30 community? Direct access to the
larger clutch disk size of the E34 M5 (240mm) and greater clamping
force of the superior E34 M5 pressure plate for high-powered modified
cars and for greater longevity than the smaller original cluth. Even
when using a standard OE-replacement E34 M5 clutch, it's the
equivalent of a performance E30 clutch... the
E34 M5 system was originally designed for a 315hp motor in a chassis
weighing several hundred pounds more than the E30.
The
lighter weight flywheel gives a very noticeable increase in
acceleration, particularly in the lower gears. Rev-matching and
heel-toe shifting are also much easier.
This package is ideal
for heavy-use enthusiast cars, either for street or track use. For
extreme-power turbo cars, UUC offers even higher-performance versions
of the E34 M5 clutch system in our Performance Organic, Kevlar, and
Cerametallic facings.
Our
E30 Stage 2/E34 M5 clutch conversion package is a direct bolt-in to
the standard 325 transmission. No modifications required, standard
starter and clutch slave cylinder are retained. Pedal effort and
engagement style is virtually identical to the standard E30 clutch.
This clutch has several advantages for the enthusiast driver:
- Maintaining the reliability and over-the-counter availability of
a BMW factory part.
- Greater clamping force than standard 3-series clutch.
- Incorporates a sprung-hub design to minimize gear rattle,
includes heavy-duty steel pressure plate.
The advantage of a sprung-hub clutch design is improved resistance (and
in many cases, complete elimination) of the residual chattering noise
at idle that some lightweight flywheel-equipped cars can experience.
Because BMW specced this clutch for use on the powerful S38-series
engine in the M5, it is easily up to the task of handling the output
from a
modified M20-series motor (all '84-'91 6-cylinder E30 modelsand early
E34 525i, and Z1).
UUC customers have been using the
Stage 2 & M5 clutch setup in turbo or supercharged M3s and MZ3s
with fantastic results. Our own testing has shown the M5 clutch
to reliably handle in excess of 450hp.
The UUC Stage 2 flywheel and clutch assembly has been used in the "test
platform" E36 M3 of Eurosport High Performance's supercharger
development,
reliably handling many miles and dyno runs in this powerful
machine. UUC also provides many US and European turbo and
supercharger tuners
with the Stage2 setup.

VERY IMPORTANT: some parts vendors have been supplying the wrong clutch
components. We strongly recommend sourcing the entire flywheel
and clutch from UUC to guarantee you get the correct parts.
